What is Autism?

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that shapes how a child experiences and interacts with the world. It can influence communication, information processing, relationships and sensory experiences.

Every autistic child is unique — with the right support, they can feel more confident in themselves and better equipped to learn, connect and thrive.

How do we assess?

Our autism assessments bring together different perspectives to build a clear picture of a child’s strengths and challenges. The process typically includes:

  • A developmental history with parents or carers.
  • Structured observations and interactions with the child.
  • Use of recognised diagnostic tools (such as ADOS-2 or ADI-R).
  • A diagnostic discussion to agree on next steps and recommendations.

This comprehensive approach helps ensure an accurate diagnosis and practical strategies for support.

Where both Autism and ADHD are being explored, the assessment includes:

  • A developmental history with parents or carers
  • An ADOS-2 with the child or young person
  • A Young DIVA-5 diagnostic interview
  • A final diagnostic discussion with our clinical team

What happens after an autism assessment?

Families, schools and local authorities receive a detailed report with findings and evidence-based recommendations. These may include adjustments in school, therapeutic interventions, or strategies to support a child’s communication, learning and wellbeing.
