What is Speech and Language Therapy?

Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) helps children and young people develop the communication skills they need to connect with others and express themselves. This includes their understanding of language, using spoken or non-spoken communication, speaking clearly, using language appropriately for different situations, and supporting fluency or voice quality.

Therapists also work with children and young people who experience difficulties with swallowing or feeding.

What does Speech and Language Therapy assess?

Our SLT assessments explore every aspect of a child’s communication, including attention, understanding, expressive language, speech sounds, social interaction and play skills. We use a range of approaches – from standardised assessments to informal observations and activities. These are carefully chosen to reflect the concerns shared by families in the pre-assessment questionnaire.

Our aim is to build a clear picture of each child’s needs and provide families with practical strategies and guidance on the best next steps.

What happens in a Speech and Language Therapy session?

Sessions are a collaboration between the child, their family and the therapist, with goals that are tailored and altered as they progress. Activities are fun and purposeful, ensuring children build communication skills they can use confidently outside the therapy room.

How Speech and Language Therapy works in schools

Our teams work in close partnership with staff across a wide range of settings – from nurseries and primary schools to secondary schools and colleges, in both mainstream and specialist environments.

We offer a comprehensive school package day, delivered by a qualified therapist or by an assistant therapist under supervision. Support is shaped around the school’s needs, helping pupils at all levels – including those with special educational needs.

How Speech and Language Therapy supports reintegration

As part of our Momenta 360 service Speech and Language Therapists identify underlying communication needs that may be affecting a child’s return to school. Working as part of the wider therapeutic team, they set clear goals and provide tailored support to remove barriers to education and help each pupil take steps back into school.
