What is Educational Psychology?

Educational Psychologists explore how children learn, develop and experience the world. By looking at cognitive, emotional, social and biological factors, they help schools, families and professionals create the right conditions for learning and wellbeing.

They also advise on teaching approaches, learning environments and emotional development, with Assistant Psychologists supporting this work under supervision.

What does Educational Psychology assess?

Educational Psychologists use a range of tools to understand how a child thinks and learns, assessing areas such as reasoning, memory, processing speed and the skills linked to reading, writing and numeracy. This helps identify what may be getting in the way of learning.

With classroom observations and input from parents, carers and staff, our team builds a complete picture of each child’s needs to guide the right support.

What happens in Educational Psychology assessments and sessions?

We’ll help build a complete picture of how a child is learning and developing, so the right support can be put in place.

Step 1

We gather background information and relevant reports from the school to build a clear understanding of the child’s needs.

Step 2

We hold two appointments – one with parents or carers, and one with the child – to explore strengths and challenges.

Step 3

We share detailed feedback, provide a diagnosis where appropriate, and offer clear, evidence-based recommendations for next steps.

How Educational Psychology works in schools

Our Educational Psychologists support pupils directly in school, working closely with the SENCO and wider staff team to ensure strategies are joined-up and practical.

We provide both targeted input and whole-school strategies, helping embed new skills into daily routines. Staff are also equipped to deliver consistent support, whether linked to an EHCP or part of a wider approach to inclusion.

How Educational Psychology supports reintegration

Educational Psychologists are a vital part of Momenta 360. They carry out assessments to identify barriers to learning, and with the support of their assistants, they support pupils with anxiety and explore underlying needs. They create a clear, joined-up plan so each pupil feels safe, supported and ready to return to school.
