At Momenta Connect, we believe meaningful change happens when we look beyond the classroom and consider the full picture around a young person.
Through our Momenta 360 support pathway, we recently worked alongside a learner and their family to better understand the barriers affecting access to education — and to build a plan grounded in compassion, collaboration and evidence-based practice.
Building a shared understanding
Our work began with a detailed clinical formulation process. This helped us develop a shared understanding of the learner’s experiences, strengths and challenges, ensuring that the goals we set were truly reflective of their needs.
During this process, it became clear that longstanding difficulties within education had not only affected the learner’s confidence and engagement but had also increased anxiety within the family home. The emotional impact extended beyond the school day, shaping family dynamics and wellbeing.
Recognising this, we knew a child-centred approach alone would not be enough. A whole-family approach was essential.
Supporting the parent as well as the pupil
Alongside the learner’s tailored educational and therapeutic support, we offered individual psychotherapeutic sessions to the parent.
This provided a confidential, non-judgemental space separate from the educational work — a place where they could focus entirely on their own wellbeing. Free from expectation or pressure, they were able to explore current challenges openly and honestly.
Creating this safe space strengthened their emotional resilience and, in turn, enhanced their capacity to support their child.
A powerful moment of reflection
One particularly meaningful moment in the work came through the parent’s willingness to engage in deep self-reflection.
They demonstrated a strong commitment to prioritising their own wellbeing, recognising that modelling self-care and emotional reflection would positively influence their child. They spoke candidly about the difficulties they had faced, while also developing self-compassion and acknowledging what they were doing well.
This shift — from self-criticism to self-awareness — marked a powerful step forward. It not only supported their own growth but also strengthened the emotional foundation around the learner.
Looking ahead: sustainable, long-term support
Support for the learner will continue to focus on clearly defined, evidence-based goals that address their individual needs. Interventions will remain flexible, adapting as progress develops.
This includes:
- Ongoing therapeutic input where appropriate
- Collaboration with external services
- Ensuring the pupil’s voice remains central to all planning
Our overarching aim is to build sustainable support around the student — promoting confidence, improving engagement and creating positive, long-term outcomes both in education and at home.
At Momenta Connect, we know that when families feel supported, young people are better able to thrive. By working together and keeping wellbeing at the heart of our approach, we help create the conditions for lasting change.
